Brain Body Dynamics Model

What is BBDM?

The Brain Body Dynamics Model (BBDM) for Children on the Autism Spectrum is an integrative therapy approach that amalgamates various evidence-based practices into a cohesive framework.

BBDM starts with the premise that

the brain-body connection influences various aspects of health, including movement, cognition, emotions, and overall well-being. Signals from the brain travel through the nervous system to different parts of the body, influencing motor skills, sensory perception, and autonomic functions. Conversely, the body sends feedback to the brain, shaping cognitive processes, emotional responses, and even decision-making. This bidirectional communication underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy brain-body connection for optimal physical and mental health.

Children with dyspraxia experience disruptions or inefficiencies in the brain-body connection, hindering their development and everyday functioning. Therefore, our approach prioritizes addressing this connection, leading to improvements in motor planning, sensory integration, speech, and independent living skills, in that order.

How is BBDM structured?

The Brain Body Dynamics Model program operates as an intensive early intervention program, running five days a week for 2.5 hours each day. It is overseen by a team consisting of a speech therapist, occupational therapist, movement teacher, and support staff. Each staff member will work individually with the child every day, except for the Occupational Therapist (OT). The OT will see the child once a week. On the remaining days, the movement teacher and supporting staff will implement the OT's instructions.

Additionally, BBDM recognizes the importance of academic skills for two key reasons:

  1. Children on the spectrum are often pattern learners and may learn to read before developing speech. We leverage this strength to enhance speech, language, through reading and writing which in turn also improve fine motor coordination (writing), sitting tolerance, and focus.

  2. We understand that readiness for school not only boosts a child's confidence but also encourages schools to provide them with more challenging materials. This prepares them for academic success and fosters their overall development.

BBDM does not employ ABA methods. However, if your child is receiving ABA services, we welcome their involvement in our program. Collaboration between BBDM staff and ABA professionals often yields the best results for the child's progress and development.

Who is eligible for the program?

To enroll in this program, the child must be between two and five years of age. An assessment is conducted to determine if your child is suitable for the program. Suitability depends on the current autism profile of the existing group. For instance, if most children in the current group have moderate to severe autism and your child has mild autism, they may not be a good fit for that group, and vice versa.

We also offer a program for children aged between 5 and 10. However, this program is reserved for children who have graduated from the BBDM program but still require support to address remaining issues. If your child falls within the 5-10 age range, you can contact us to inquire about availability in that program. Please note that we expect a certain level of functioning skills at this stage.
